promoting forum

I was thinking of making a social forum site, but didnt realy know how to promote it is it the same as any website directory's, email marking, bloging, what is the best way to promote.

Mostly the same strategy. But before inviting people on your forum cum social network fill it with interesting articles, information, guide and others related to your site title.
