View Full Version : Verify Cpanel backups

How does someone verify cpanel backups? Is it a manual process? My logs always show that it is successful, but I am not sure if I should trust that.

Why would it be unsuccessful? If you are able to download them, they should work just fine when put back up onto another cPanel server.

I would tend to agree, but after many years in IT and seeing "successful" backups not actually work, it is nice to verify backups from time to time. Plus I am new to cPanel so not fully comfortable yet.

cPanel is reputable and works well. I have run into problems with backups, as you stated, though. Do you have SSH access to the server because I believe there is some shell stuff you can do to check up on those backups?

I do believe I can get jailed SSH (hostgator). Any suggestions on the commands, sorry for my ignorance worked with windows and .net exclusively for many years and now using linux host.

My advice would be to get away from hostgator as soon as possible. I don't mean to sound spammy, but YavaHost (http://yavahost.com) is an option.

Maybe contact their support to see if it is working. (I also know how their support agents can be stupid)

I just started with them, they seem very responsive so far. I would just like to know that my backups are working for sure..:)

Just check for the file's existence

I've found that cPanel will sometimes create the files but then they won't work, so that method doesn't work.

sounds like it is not too much of a concern, I will check with hostgator and see if they have suggestions.

sounds like it is not too much of a concern,

Until something goes wrong and you loose your site !

Being pesamistic, I always like to have a back up that I have ftp'd from the server, on my hard disk, and on a second back up disk away from my office. They may not be as uptodate as I would like but they have saved my bacon at least once

I am weird about backups, that is why I am a liitle concerned about the cpanel backups. I am working on another method of backups that I will do along side my cpanel backups.

You might try rsync for backup.
