Anyone done it? Either legitimate, or illegitimate?

The only way I can see it is approaching known websites with mailing lists. But I wouldn't know where to find these. Or are there any other channels?

You mean advertising in emails, or sending blind emails to people?

If the latter, I wouldn't recommend it. I've not done it, but I can't imagine it being effective if you do it legally, and I would not want to do it illegally. It isn't just about ending up in jail, you could lose your hosting etc too.
