Well, I guess we were all expecting this to happen, it was just a question of when...

I heard.. very good news. The demand for highly searched hyphenated commercial domains will go up ;)

Icebane, please explain...

Good for Yahoo!, google needs competition...

Competition is good... it's bad to rely on one search engine (Google).

Are you asking me to explain the comment about hyphentated domains?

Yeah, I agree with you on the competition point, I don't get why hyphentated domains are more important now.

Inktomi puts HUGE emphasis on the keywords being in your domain and directory/file name.

Example:

www.nike-shoes.com/nike-shoes.asp would score extremely high for the phrase 'nike shoes'.

They're not using Inktomi though... They've made their own engine, which may or may not place emphasis on keywords in domain/directory/file name....

Yahoo made their own engine?

I'm not sure it is actually that good to have two major players. Firstly it will mean that we could have to learn a new set of SEO rules and secondly, if those rules conflict between the two engines then we will have to compromise which wouldn't be so great.

There're obviously plus points too, but it wont all be plain sailing. At least with Google we only really have to focus on one set of rules, and if we get them right then we get Yahoo traffic chucked in as a bonus. Now we may have to put effort into fighting for both.

chromate, I think it's dangerous NOT to have two (or more!) SEs. Focussing on just one engine gives that engine too much leverage. What happens if it suddenly decides to offer its top spots to paying sponsors? Where will that leave those webmasters who can't afford to advertise?

As far as I'm concerned, I will continue to create content that is keyword rich, but won't (or will try not to;)) focus purely on 'winning' at the Google game...

All just my highly-thought-out opinion of course :p

I agree with Mark, having all your 'eggs' in one SE is definitely risky.

I also think that more SEs might reduce the amount of spam in the SERPs - multiple algorithms for finding good content should mean that spammers find it harder to stay up there?

I agree, it is much easier just having to SEO for Google, but I dont think that the SEO rules will conflict between the algorithms, they are all trying to find good content...

I have noticed changes inmediately. My main 2 keywords change inmediately.

Keyword 1 - Position number 1, 2 and 4

Keyword 2 - Position number 1 and 8

Thanks Yahoo!

I'm all for Yahoo having its own search engine, but where they ready? I mean, do they really have 3 or 4 or 6 billion documents indexed? (Or however many documents there are on the web these days.) When compared to Google how much of the web do you think they have indexed? 50%? 55?

Yes, I'm raising this issue because out of all my sites I think I'm 1% indexed in Yahoo compared to Google.

And what Yahoo bot should I be on the lookout for?

Thank you.
