Have they been successful in bringing traffic to your site?
Have they affected your Google page rank?

Every few months I go through and do submissions, but not free directories, and I'm very discriminating with the paid ones.

Traffic from directories are very minimal but they tend to be very targeted, but overtime they add up. They do help in your SEO but directory submission alone won't get you high PR and top ranking on the SERP - you should also consider other link building methods to get more favorable results.
